Amalfi is the capital of the Coast that from this city takes its name; it is an important city from the historical, artistical, economic and cultural point of view.
The city has the shape of a fan: the beach is the wider part (1,5 km) and then city narrows, until the Valle dei Mulini (valley of the mills), an interesting zone, where to make pleasant walks.
The foundation of the city goes back to roman age; Amalfi acquired importance, until, in the 11th century, became capital of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, and with Pisa, Venice and Genoa ruled on the Mediterranean Sea.
The most famous monument of Amalfi is the Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Andrew: its characteristic element is the facade of the 19th century, at the top of a staircase that overlooks the central Piazza of the city.
It is also interesting the Museum of the Paper (museo della carta, in italian): a former paper mill transformed into a museum, where are exposed the machinery and equipments used to realize the paper called "carta bambagina", a valuable type of paper produced in Amalfi since the Middle Ages.
